Building a Braai Area in Cape Town?
Braai Area Builders in Cape Town
We build the brickwork, the chimney that actually draws, the roof over it and the power points in it, on one fixed-price quote.
No Pressure. No Payment Required.
Braai Areas Built to Last
A braai area is a small build that goes wrong in predictable ways. The slab cracks because the foundation was rushed. The chimney smokes back at you because the flue was never sized against the opening. The roof leaks where it meets the house because two trades each assumed the other sealed it.
SmartCurve has been building in Cape Town since 2017, with over 100 projects behind us. A braai area is masonry first: foundation and concrete slab, clay brick laid straight, fire brick where the heat lands, a flue that clears smoke on a windy day, then the trades that finish it.

What We Build, and What We Don’t
Search for a braai builder, and you’re shown three different kinds of business. Worth knowing which you’re talking to.
Built-in braais
Built into a wall or a purpose-built surround, with fire brick at the firebox and a flue running up through a chimney. Our most common job.
Freestanding braais
A standalone brick braai on its own slab. Same foundation and flue work, no roof to tie in.
Enclosed braai rooms
An existing patio or stoep closed in, or a new room from scratch: roof structure, lintels, ventilation, and a chimney that draws well.
Covered braai areas and outdoor kitchens
A roofed entertainment area built around the braai, with a prep counter, wood storage, lighting, power points and plumbing for a sink.
What we don’t do: we don’t manufacture or sell braai units, inserts or steel braais, and we don’t fit aluminium-and-glass enclosures. Those are different businesses and Cape Town has good ones. Already bought a unit? We’ll build around it and fit it.
Getting the Chimney Right
The most common complaint about a braai area is smoke coming back at you. Usually a build problem, not a wood problem.
Why a braai chimney doesn’t draw
Smoke rises because hot air is lighter than cold, but only if the flue lets it leave faster than it cools. Too wide and it slows, cools and falls back; too narrow and it can’t clear what the fire makes. The flue has to be sized against the braai opening.
Flue sizing and chimney height
A chimney also has to clear the air moving over your roof and walls. One that stops short of the roofline sits in turbulent air, and that air pushes back down the flue. On an enclosed braai this matters more, not less.
Cowls, dampers and wind
Cape Town wind is a design input. A cowl stops a gust driving down the flue; a damper closes the chimney when the braai isn’t in use. A sealed room still needs air coming in, or the fire competes with you for it.
Every Trade Your Braai Area Needs, Under One Contractor
A braai area looks like one job and is actually five. The joins between them are where problems appear.
Brickwork & foundations — excavation, a concrete slab sized for the structure, clay or face brick laid level, fire brick at the firebox, lintels over openings.
Plaster & finishing — plaster and skim where called for, face brick left clean where it isn’t.
Roofing & covered structures — roof over a covered patio or braai room, flashed where it meets the house so the join doesn’t leak.
Electrical & lighting — power points and lighting you can use after dark.
Plumbing & prep counters — sink, prep counter and wood storage, with water and waste run-out.
One quote, one team, one person accountable. SABS-approved materials throughout.
What a Braai Area Costs in Cape Town
We don’t publish braai prices, and we’d rather explain why than give you a number that turns out wrong. The same budget builds a generous open braai on one property and barely covers the roof on another. Here’s what moves the number.
Tier 1 — Open braai or braai surround
Slab, brick surround, firebox and flue. No roof, no walls.
Quoted after the free site visit
Tier 2 — Covered or enclosed braai room
The above plus roof structure, walls or enclosure of an existing patio, lintels, and a chimney designed to draw sealed.

Tier 3 — Layout changes and premium finishes
Opening the braai into the house, a full outdoor kitchen, or a structure that changes the roofline.

What moves a braai quote
- Whether there’s a roof. The biggest single factor — structure, lintels, flashing, and a chimney that has to work enclosed.
- Chimney height and flue sizing. Taller and wider means more brick, more labour, more scaffolding.
- Plumbing and electrical runs. Cheap where connections are close, expensive across a property.
- Access. Everything is carried in by hand.
- New build versus enclosing what’s there. We check what an existing structure can carry first.
Do You Need Council Plans for a Braai Area?
It depends on what you’re building, and it’s worth knowing before you commit to a start date.
The dividing line is structural, not cosmetic. An open braai on an existing patio is a different proposition from an enclosed, roofed room, which is a structural addition to your home. Requirements also vary by municipality and by what’s already on your property.
On the free site visit, we tell you which side of that line you’re on, and if plans are needed, we say so upfront. Fuller picture: what does and doesn’t need council approval in Cape Town.

Braai Area FAQs
What does a braai area cost in Cape Town?
No honest single answer, which is why we quote after seeing the space. The biggest factor is whether there’s a roof; access and chimney height move it too. The visit and quote are free.
Do I need council plans for a braai area?
It depends whether what you’re building is structural. An open braai on an existing patio and an enclosed roofed room are treated differently, and requirements vary by municipality. We’ll tell you on the site visit. More detail: council approval in Cape Town.
Why doesn’t my braai chimney draw properly?
Usually the flue is the wrong size for the opening, the chimney is too short, or wind is driving down an uncapped flue. All three are fixable — we can look and tell you which you have.
Can you fit a braai unit I’ve already bought?
Yes. We don’t sell braai units, so there’s no pressure to buy ours — we build the structure, size the flue for your unit, and fit it in.
How long does a braai area take to build?
Depends on scope — an open surround and a full enclosed braai room take very different amounts of time. You’ll get a clear timeframe with your free quote.
Can you enclose an existing braai or patio?
Often, yes. We check what the structure can carry and whether the chimney will still draw once the space is closed in — a braai that works in open air doesn’t automatically work sealed.
